Venezuela signs alliance with Kawatek to manufacture bionic prostheses

The Venezuelan government signed an alliance with Japanese company Kawatek to develop prostheses with bionic technology in the country, according to the outlet AlbertoNews. The agreement aims to serve those affected by the double earthquake and by the events of January 3, according to data published by the digital outlet.

During a tour of the Profesor Lenín Molina Peñaloza orthotics and prosthetics laboratory, located in Caracas, the chief executive of the Japanese firm, Álvaro Ríos, said a second phase of the agreement involves transferring knowledge to set up a facility in the country and supply local demand for medical devices.

Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez said during the visit that the first bionic-technology treatments focus on the recovery of upper limbs, before moving on to the lower limbs of patients affected by the recent emergencies.

Developing prostheses with advanced technological components requires specialized supply chains and personnel trained in biomechanics, engineering and physiatry. The transfer of industrial knowledge seeks to reduce dependence on imports in a sector critical to public health.

Authorities said the delivery of these devices and the care of registered cases will be channeled through the official census system in the coming months, while the local plant advances in its process of technological reactivation.
