A total of 2.9 tons of cocaine and marijuana were seized during a joint maritime operation in the Caribbean Sea between Venezuela and France, the Ministry of Interior, Justice and Peace reported on Friday, according to Correo del Caroní.

The joint action left four people detained, who are now at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office for the corresponding investigations. The operation involved the Special Anti-Drug Unit of the National Guard, Navy coast guard vessels and intelligence personnel from the French Navy.

Authorities seized 166 bales containing a total of 4,152 bricks of drugs, divided between cocaine and marijuana. The deployment is part of maritime border surveillance efforts to combat transnational drug trafficking.

The Venezuelan government formally thanked the French naval authorities for their cooperation in the success of the operation. So far, the nationalities of the detainees have not been reported, nor have any statements from Minister Diosdado Cabello about the operation been released.
