Zohran Mamdani takes office as mayor of New York

Zohran Mamdani took office as mayor of New York on November 2, 2026, according to the newspaper EL NACIONAL. The swearing-in ceremony was held at the former Old City Hall subway station in Manhattan, during midnight celebrations.

Mamdani, 34 and a member of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, gained prominence through a campaign focused on reducing the cost of living in the American city. His main policy proposals include rent freezes for millions of apartments, the introduction of child care services and the launch of free public buses.

Mamdani's arrival at City Hall sets up a scenario of institutional tension with the administration of President Donald Trump. During the election campaign, the federal president questioned the new mayor's positions and went so far as to threaten to cut federal funds earmarked for the North American metropolis, according to media reports.

Despite political friction at the federal level, the new mayor will begin his four-year term with the backing of prominent figures on the American left, such as Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who are taking part in the official public ceremonies at City Hall.
